3-star Victorian coaching inn on Southampton High Street

Location & Historic Character

Situated on High Street, this grade II listed former coaching inn is 450 metres from West Quay Shopping Centre. Southampton Central Train Station is less than a mile away, and cruise ship terminals are within 650 metres of the hotel. The property sits in a historical part of the city that once hosted the Royal Family during the 1800s.

Rooms & Accommodations

Bedrooms include options such as family rooms that accommodate up to four guests and bridal suites with four-poster beds. Most rooms are en suite, and some retain the historical connection from the Victorian era through original architectural details. Earlier check-in and later check-out times are offered compared to major chain hotels.

Dining & Bar

The Hotel's Lounge Bar serves a selection of cocktails and wines for evening relaxation. Breakfast is available with a cooked-to-order option that includes hot items such as bacon, sausages, and eggs alongside cereals and yoghurt. Special diet menus and wine or champagne can be arranged upon request.

Family & Business Facilities

Spacious rooms that sleep four guests make the hotel suitable for families visiting Southampton for leisure or cruise departures. Three meeting rooms are available for business events, and the hotel provides fax and photocopying services. The multilingual staff assists with dry cleaning, laundry, and board games or puzzles are offered for younger guests.

Services & Parking

The hotel operates a 24-hour front desk with express check-in/check-out and luggage storage for guests arriving before or after their cruise. On-site private parking is available for a fee, an asset given the central location on High Street. Security is provided through CCTV, key card access, and a night warden who controls the main gate after 10pm.

Highlights

Location: 450m from West Quay Shopping Centre, 650m from cruise terminals

Rooms: Family rooms (sleep 4) and bridal suites with four-poster beds

Dining: Lounge Bar with cocktails; cooked-to-order breakfast

Services: Earlier check-in/later check-out, multilingual staff

Parking: On-site private parking (fee applies)

Ideal for: Families, cruise passengers, history enthusiasts

“In my opinion, the location is a strong point, placing you steps away from shopping and nightlife; parking, while an added cost, is convenient in this central area. From what I gathered, the rooms provide comfortable beds and are generally clean, making it suitable for a short stay. It seems to me a practical choice if you prioritize being in the heart of the city.”

The room i got was not great. the peeling paint was visible and quite distracting. the bathroom was very small with no space to hang anything. We loved the pool. but the tv reception was also poor, so i could barely watch anything in the evenings.

poor drainage bathroom mould
the bathroom was a bit of a letdown. the shower didn't drain properly, so water pooled. there wasn't a safety mat either, so the floor felt slippery. i also noticed some mould in the bathroom (probably needs better ventilation).
